Federal Court Release Clues
Fresno County's public release data can show federal-court-order release labels and United States Marshal agency values. Those fields are important because they distinguish an ordinary county release from a booking that ended under a federal court or federal custody path. A release from Fresno County Jail on an `FCR`-style federal court order label means the local jail custody event ended. It does not automatically prove final disposition of the federal case or release from every federal system.
The receiving or follow-up record depends on the case stage. A federal pretrial case may involve U.S. District Court records and supervision conditions. A sentenced federal case may move into BOP custody and later show in the BOP Inmate Locator as released, not in BOP custody, or assigned to a facility. A temporary USMS hold may involve transport, court appearance, or detention decisions that are not fully explained by the Fresno County release table alone.
How to Confirm a USMS Release
Begin with the Fresno County record because it anchors the local custody event. Use the 72-hour jail releases table or the detailed Inmate Information Center release view when the release is recent. Save the booking number, JID, name, release date, release type, arresting agency, and charges. If the county row uses a United States Marshal agency value or a federal court release label, move to federal systems for the next status check.

- Check Fresno Superior Court only if there is also a local county case or related state-court event.
- Use federal court records or PACER for U.S. District Court case status, orders, detention decisions, judgment, and supervised-release terms.
- Use the BOP Inmate Locator for a person sentenced federally or released from BOP custody.
- Use USMS or counsel/court contacts for current prisoner-transport or federal hold questions that are not public in the county feed.
The BOP locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present and may show release date, projected release date, released status, or "not in BOP custody." BOP also cautions that release dates can change, including during federal time-credit recalculations. A BOP released result means the person is not in BOP custody at that point; it does not rule out federal supervision, another law-enforcement hold, a state case, or a court obligation.

For local jail proof, use the Fresno County Sheriff's records portal and ask for the booking and release record. For federal case proof, use federal court records. PACER is the national federal court records system and can show docket entries, orders, judgments, detention hearings, plea and sentencing events, and supervised-release terms where public. Some records may be sealed, restricted, or unavailable without proper authorization.

A county records request should be narrow and records-oriented. Include full name, booking number, JID, booking date, release date, arresting agency, agency case number if known, and a request for the publicly releasable booking and release record. Do not ask the Sheriff's Office to determine the federal sentence or federal supervised-release status; those are federal court or BOP questions.
About Federal Holds
The United States Marshal / federal court hold path is a custody and court route, not a standalone Fresno jail building. A person may be physically held in Fresno County Jail for a federal court matter, transported by USMS, released under a federal order, or later committed to BOP. The Fresno release table gives the county booking outcome. It may not show the complete federal docket, judgment, release conditions, federal sentence calculation, or BOP custody status.
FCI Mendota adds another Fresno-specific federal layer. A person released from FCI Mendota should be checked through BOP, not the county jail feed, unless that person also had a Fresno County booking. For a federal defendant temporarily held in county jail, the county record and federal record can both matter, but they answer different questions.
Released from County, Still Federal
Federal release wording requires care. A Fresno County record may say the jail released the person under a federal court order. That can mean release from the local jail booking, transfer to federal custody, release on federal conditions, or another court-directed event depending on the order. The only defensible way to interpret it is to confirm the local event locally and the federal case federally.
Older Fresno facility references can add noise to the search. The Main Jail, North Annex, West Annex, and former South Annex are part of the local jail-facility history, but a USMS or federal court path is identified less by unit name and more by the release type, arresting agency, agency case number, court docket, and BOP or USMS follow-up. If a record names an older annex, keep the facility note but anchor the verification to the booking and federal case identifiers.

Federal Court Record Sequence
A United States Marshal or federal court clue in a Fresno release row should start a federal follow-up, not end the search. Confirm the county booking release first. Then use the federal court docket to understand the case event, order, appearance, sentence, or supervised-release issue. If a federal prison sentence follows, use BOP for federal custody and release status. If the person was only temporarily held locally for a federal matter, the BOP locator may not be the right source.
The agency field is especially important. A United States Marshal value, FCR label, or federal court order release tells the reader that Fresno County custody and federal process may overlap.
